Phytoplankton (algae) is commonly found in the top layers of water bodies and thus, they can easily infiltrate fish farm enclosures. They can access these fish environments through open nets, equipment transfers and even during strong winds and waves. Mitigating the risk of these Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) in fish farms with an Algae Curtain is a sustainable solution.
Importance of Algae Barriers in Fish Farms
There is a multitude of reasons why Cunninghams algae barriers are the best protection method:
- Shading – The curtains due to their dense fabric, block natural sunlight from reaching the water below, creating what is known as ‘Shading’. Without sunlight, many harmful algae species cannot thrive and subsequently die.
- Physical Barrier – The algae curtains surround the entire farming enclosures, creating a physical barrier and deterring jellyfish from entering. Jellyfish naturally are attracted to fish farms as they provide shelter and a source of food – fish!
- Material – our curtains can be made from industrial strength PVC or permeable, lightweight, and high-strength polyester. Both applications will create a preventative solution, reducing the need for antibiotics and chemicals commonly used to treat contaminated fish. The eradication of this step reduces fish treatment times and helps fish farms reduce harvesting times.
Our permeable fabric option has a close enough thread count to keep algae out whilst also allowing water to continuously flow through. This approach will ensure fish are not disrupted in their environments and other benefits such as better waste management and increased oxygenation.
